The Pacific Basin Institute produced a 10-part documentary series The Pacific Century, in 1993. For part 5, "Reinventing Japan," which focuses on post-World War II Japan, key figures of the American occupation government were interviewed about their contributions and views.

Beate Sirota Gordon

Beate Gordon played a significant role in drafting Japan's post-war Constitution and for her efforts to include Japanese women's rights into the document.

Richard Poole

Lt. Richard Poole (USN), a foreign service officer who served on the planning committee of the Japanese Constitution.

Milton J. Esman

Esman served as a Civil Affairs Officer under SCAP and participated in the drafting of the Japanese Constitution.

Welcome to the Pacific Basin Institute at Pomona College. A non-profit California corporation founded a quarter century ago, PBI is dedicated to expanding and enhancing comity and shared knowledge among the nations and cultures that face on the great ocean. Since moving to Claremont in 1997, PBI has become a valued study, media production and research center for this distinguished liberal arts college, while retaining its 501(c)3 independent status for a variety of out-reach projects. Since the turn of the past century Pomona College has been a leader in Asian Studies among American universities. PBI's arrival on campus has greatly extended their scope. Besides its participation in student and faculty projects on campus, PBI also offers books, films and lecture programs to a general as well as academic audience.
