| Description | Dr. Alan Leshner discusses the role of science and scientists in major social issues, such as religion, evolution, stem cell research, global warming, and political agendas. He suggests that it is important for scientists not only to educate the public about such issues, but also to work harder to garner public support for them. For example, he suggests that one of the reasons policy on global warming has not advanced despite scientific knowledge is because it lacks political support. Similarly, progress on stem-cell research is slowed due to roadblocks in religious communities. Leshner proposes that for scientific knowledge to proliferate, scientists must work harder to listen to public feedback, and work with the public at a more focused level. |
