| Description | This presentation will discuss the overall idea that it is important to understand the dynamics of interpersonal conversations about health for two reasons: 1) interpersonal conversations can influence the participants' health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, and 2) if we advocate that persons say certain things such as "Just say no" or engage in discussions about sensitive topics, we should know the issues and concerns that likely would arise and we should offer communication strategies for handling the interactional challenges. Conversation Analysis is a rigorous social scientific method for studying the dynamics of conversations and analyzing interactional practices. The aims of Conversation Analysis and the types of data needed will be discussed. To illustrate the usefulness of the method, a Conversation Analytic study on how students notified family members of their intentions to sign donor cards will be presented. |
