DescriptionOhio's transition to a first person consent organ donor registry provides an opportunity to study attitude and behavior change in regard to organ donation. Ohio was an early adopter of first person consent registries for organ donation. The research project involved was conducted statewide and involved collaboration between the four organ procurement organizations in the state. In conjunction with the establishment of the first person consent donor registry, a statewide educational advertising campaign was conducted to promote the registry and organ donor registration. The research had the following three objectives: 1) measure attitudes about organ donation and identify behavioral intent to become an organ donor; 2) measure organ donor registrations; and 3) measure actual donations. Multiple measures and data sources were used to determine the influence of the statewide educational campaign and the impact of Ohio's first person consent donor registry. The research seeks to understand the effects of the educational campaign and the first person consent donor registry on attitude change and short-term and long-term behavioral change. The presentation will address how theory informed the research design, how theory was used in this research and the limitations that we faced in this real world research project.
