Carl Hertel (1930-2004) served as professor of art and environmental design at Pitzer College from 1966 until his retirement in 1994. He holds a B.A. in art and Chinese history from Pomona College (1952), an M.A. in Far Eastern languages and history from Harvard University (1955), and an M.F.A. in painting from the Claremont Graduate School (1958). Hertel’s interests as an artist, educator, and scholar were broad. The series of Hertel lithographs in Pitzer College’s collection demonstrate his unique vision on the interaction of landscape and human life.
