Originally trained as an industrial engineer, Sandeep Mukherjee (b. 1964) returned to the academy to pursue art training, receiving a B.F.A. from the Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles (1996) and an M.F.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles (1999). He is currently Assistant Professor of Art, with an emphasis in painting, at Pomona College. Of his visually powerful work, Mukherjee has said, “My work strives to articulate those instances in which explicit distinctions known to us through science, art and culture blur and fade into one another.” Working in a variety of media, including abstract paintings and installations, Mukherjee’s broad influences include Vincent Van Gogh and Sol Lewitt. He has shown his work at Pitzer College, Pomona College Museum of Art, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, Riverside Art Museum, and many other locations. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Pomona College Museum of Art, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, and other institutions. The work by the artist in Pitzer College’s collection is a generous gift from Mukherjee and Katie Brennan.
