Born in South Korea in 1963, Kyungmi Shin studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute and received her M.F.A. with an emphasis in sculpture and installation from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1995. She has taught at several institutions in southern California, including the University of California, Irvine, Pasadena City College, and the John Paul Getty Museum. She has said of her work, “What drives my work is my curiosity about the visual world around me…. Through … exercises of observation and the reflections on the original observation, I am investigating the nature of perception, memory, and the mechanisms of visual logic.” Shin’s work includes two-dimensional work, three-dimensional forms, and installation. In 2007, began a three-year public art project, HERE NOW THERE THEN, supported by and hosted in Culver City, CA. She has exhibited her work at the American Art Center in New York, the Laguna Beach Museum, the Korean American Museum, and the Virginia University Art Museum. Shin’s work has been supported by an Art in Residence Grant, City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs, a Pasadena Cultural Affairs Individual Artist Grant, and an American Association of University Women Career Development Grant.
