Republican mural, Shaws Road, West Belfast, 1981.Mural protesting death of Bobby Sands, first Hunger Striker to die. 'The Lark and the Freedom Fighter' (title of collection of Sands' writings from prison). Quotation from text: 'I have the spirit of freedom that cannot be quenched by even the most horrendous treatment. Of course I can be murdered, but while I remain alive, I remain what I am, a political prisoner of war, and no one can change that'. Image of Sands, with Irish Tricolour and barbed wire. |
