Description |
Loyalist mural, Hopewell Crescent, Lower Shankill, West Belfast, 2000. Mural makes links between three organisations, Ulster Defence Union, established in 1893 to resist Home Rule Legislation, the Ulster Defence Association, founded in 1972 as an umbrella organisation for various Loyalist groups, and the Ulster Freedom Fighters, the cover name for the military wing of the UDA. Contemporary representation of armed and masked UFF volunteer, with UDU member in late 19th century uniform, and UDA member in representation which dates from time of the Loyalist Workers' Strike in 1974. Crest of UDU, Union jack topped with Crown, with Royal ensign to left and Union Jack to right; UDA crest to right, Red Hand of Ulster topped with Crown, with Northern Irish flag to left and Union Jack to right; both organisations shared the same motto - 'Quis Separabit' - Who shall separate us?' |
