With its presence – or omnipresence
– on the World Wide Web, Wikipedia
is probably the most utilized encyclopedia
in the history of reference
sources. But is it a reliable and
authoritative source of information?
Wikipedia is written and edited
entirely by volunteers, meaning that
anyone who wants to can add or
make changes to articles. The sheer
number of people contributing to
Wikipedia makes the range of topics
wider than any print encyclopedia.
However, the very openness that
makes Wikipedia such a treasure house
of enthusiasm also leaves it
highly prone to maliciousness, misinformation,
and even mischief ( a story
in the New York Times covered a well
known individual whose Wikipedia bio
was changed as a practical joke to
link him to the assassination of JFK).

There are also excellent specialized
encyclopedias and dictionaries on
