Description	Susan Phillips, Faculty Associate in Urban Studies at Pitzer College, describes her research on Los Angeles gangs and class projects her students have done using GIS. Gang life, she argues, is inherently spacial and discusses using GIS in her research to map changes in violence, such as aggravated assault and robbery, over time following a gang sweep in south L.A. aimed at curbing violence by targeting the drug trade. Among the student projects she describes are some that used GIS to map the relation of school districts to community centers; examined racial violence in schools by relating the placement of school districts to the ethnicity of neighborhoods and gang territories; and that looked at housing and housing prices in San Bernardino, Orange Country, Riverside and Los Angeles Country in support of purchasing a group home for CYA offenders.
