New in CCDL : Illuminated Renaissance Manuscript
The Claremont Colleges Digital Library (CCDL) has a new collection, the Gradual
from Maundy Thursday to the Vigil of Pentecost. This 16th-century illuminated manuscript
contains Latin text and plainsong music to be sung at the Roman Catholic mass. Many pages
contain decorated initials, and nine pages have large historiated initials enclosed by
floral borders. Annotations include full liturgical information, translation of rubrics,
and musical and liturgical comparisons with the Liber Usualis. To see the gradual, click

mass media within the context of the New Politics suggested by cultural theorists
including Theodore Adorno, Saul Alinsky, and Slavoj Zize.
Gender and Computing Maria Klawe, President, Harvey Mudd College
Thursday, Nov. 29, 4:15 PM . Founders Room, Honnold/Mudd Library The computer is the
quotidian, ubiquitous machine that defines our age, and yet there are many fewer women
than men in the field of computer science. What cultural or educational pressures might
be preventing young women from entering and benefiting this field? President Maria Klawe
will discuss the history, reasons for, and possible ways to change this major gender imbalance.

Frocks for the First: What They Wore When Scripps Began
Through December, Denison Library Celebrating the arrival of the first Scripps class in
1927 with photos, fashion plates, clothing histories, and dresses worn by women 80 years
ago.
