L’Aventure en Ballon:
18th-19th Century Experiments with Ballooning from the Carruthers Aviation Collection
March 24—May 18, 2008 Clark Humanities Museum Scripps College
In November 1783 the Montgolfier brothers designed and successfully launched the first manned hot air
balloon, observed by nearly all of Paris, including King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. What had once been fanciful imaginings was now real; the pursuit of human flight became a passion for many from then onward.
On view in the exhibition are the first book about hot air ballooning, Description des Expériences de la Machine Aérostatique de MM. de Montgolfier
(1783); first-hand accounts of pioneering aeronauts; and prints
and engravings that document milestones in balloon flight in the
18th and 19th centuries.
The Carruthers Aviation Collection was presented to Claremont
McKenna College in 1950; the collection, housed in Honnold/
Mudd Library Special Collections, consists of more than 4,000
rare books, journals, maps, prints, and manuscripts about the history of flight.
