FROM THE ARCHIVES:
THE COCONUT GROVE
THE LIBRARIES OF THE CLAREMONT COLLEGES
In the fall of 1946, Claremont College Undergraduate
School for Men (now Claremont
McKenna College) opened with eighty-six
students. Until the completion of the new
residence units on the CMC campus, students
were housed in temporary, barracks-style
rooms in “Big Bridges”, and attended classes
there, too. The room under the stage was designated a recreation room for the students.
Fitted with card tables and chairs and decorated
with potted palm trees, it quickly became
a favorite hangout for the students who began
affectionately called it the “Coconut Grove.”
