New this semester, the Libraries of
The Claremont Colleges supports the
innovative use of technology for
students, staff and faculty, more
specifically: Geographic Information
Systems.
GIS is a powerful, marketable tool
that allows information to be
displayed to a location, such as
people to an address, crime to a
demographic area, or species to a
slope. Critical thinking and problem
solving are used to analyze spatially
this varied information to give a
better understanding of why certain
populations vote, spend or where
species can be found.

The Slocum Award for Student Libraries

The Slocum Award is given to the Scripps Senior who has formed the most meaningful
personal collection of books. This year’s entries includes subjects ranging from Queen
Elizabeth I and the Great War to fairy tales and contemporary Indian fiction.

The Truman Commission and the History of
Access to American Higher Education

In 1947, nearly sixty years ago, President Harry
Truman commissioned a report entitled Higher
Education for Democracy: The Report of the President's
Commission on Higher Education, which
recommended massive expansion of access to
college. Professor Perkins will discuss the history
of access to higher education after the Truman
Commission as well as current challenges to the
tenets of this report.
