Title
Individuals, groups, and society: the psychology of social action
Creator
Snyder, Mark
Series
Stauffer Colloquium Series on Applied Psychology
Date
2007-09-27
Subject-LCSH
Social action
Personality
Social psychology
Collective behavior
Description
In
many
ways
,
working
alone
and
together
,
people
often
take
action
for the
benefit
of
other
people
, their
communities
, and for
society
at
large
. For
example
, as
individuals
, they
serve
as
volunteers
and
give
to
charities
; and, as
members
of
groups
and
organizations
, they
work
to
address
the
problems
of
society
. These
phenomena
of
social
action
are
intriguing
, for they
typically
occur
in the
absence
of any
formal
requirements
and
often
involve
considerable
personal
cost
and
sacrifice
.
Why
, then,
do
people
engage
in
social
action
? And, what are the
consequences
of
social
action
for
individuals
,
groups
, and
society
? To
address
such
questions
,
Dr
.
Snyder
integrated
the
perspectives
of
personality
and
social
psychology
in
studies
of
diverse
forms
of
social
action
. The
findings
of these
studies
,
conducted
in
naturalistic
settings
and in
psychological
laboratories
, have
revealed
the
personal
and
social
motivations
that
dispose
people
to
become
involved
in
social
action
and the
features
of
communities
that
make
them
most
conducive
to
social
action
. As
well
, these
findings
speak
to
theoretical
considerations
of the
nature
of
individual
and
collective
behavior
and
practical
concerns
with the
role
of
social
action
in
society
.
