Description
A woman is depicted inside her house , leaning out the window to visit with a passing woman and child . The woman in the window wears multicolored striped ribbons and white flowers on her lace cap . Her dress is gray with long bell sleeves . Over her dress she wears a black velvet jacket with scallop edged v-neck and long bell sleeves , trimmed with black lace . She wears bracelets on both wrists . She hands the little girl a bunch of grapes . The little girl wears her hair in two braided buns , covering each ear , accented with blue ribbon . Her dress is light blue , off the shoulder , with three-quarter length sleeves and ends just at her knees . The bodice is edged in narrow ruched ruffles and the skirt has four horizontal rows of ruffles . Under the blue dress , she wears a white undergarment with a high neck and long sleeves . She wears gray ankle boots with buttons on the side . Her mother wears a lavender bonnet with scalloped edges , trimmed with ruffles , leaves , flowers , and lace , and she carries a white parasol in her left hand . Her dress is light orangy tan with a jewel neckline and long bell sleeves . The jacket is edged with black ribbons on the sleeves , bodice , and hem . The skirt has multiple horizontal rows of black trim progressively getting wider down the skirt . The jacket is trimmed with bars of ribbon across two slashes on each sleeve , and down the center front , with ribbon rosettes with hanging ends on each sleeve . The overall effect is that the outfit was historically inspired by the look of seventeenth century costume . She also wears multiple bracelets and yellow gloves. There is a basket full of flowers resting on the ledge under the window .
