Description
This
is
an
audio
recording
of the
third
in a
series
of
lectures
by
Peter
Drucker
,
given
on
November
7
,
1989
. The
topic
is
the
job
duties
and
job
rights
of
knowledge
workers
.
Drucker
begins
with a
warning
that his
talk
may
annoy
some
people
because
he
is
going
to
say
things
they
do
not
want
to
hear
. He
discusses
how
recently
there have been a
lot
more
cases
of
people
suing
for
unlawful
dismissal
from
jobs
, and that the
employers
always
lose
,
even
when
they
settle
out
of
court
. He
agrees
that
it
is
important
for
jobs
to be
protected
, but
cautions
that
we
have to be
careful
not to
go
too
far
and
become
trapped
like
with
academic
tenure
.
Drucker
also
goes
on to
say
that
where
there are
rights
, there have to be
responsibilities
. A
knowledge
worker’s
job
duties
should
include
having
performance
standards
and
taking
responsibility
for
self
improvement
as a
professional
in a
specific
knowledge
area
. He also
says
that there are
three
common
misconceptions
by
personnel
management
in
regards
to
knowledge
workers
.
Drucker
lists
these as a
fair
days
work
for a
fair
days
pay
,
only
blue
collar
industrial
workers
need
to be
managed
, and there
is
one
personnel
policy
that
works
for
everyone
.
