Book Title
Abandon ship! : the saga of the U.S.S. Indianapolis, the Navy's greatest sea disaster
Subject
Indianapolis (Cruiser)
World War, 1939-1945 - Naval operations, American
Shipwrecks - Pacific Ocean
Description
Peter
Maas
discusses
Richard
F
.
Newcomb’s
book
,
“Abandon
Ship!”
He
begins
by
explaining
how the
book
is
about
the
sinking
of the
U.S.S
.
Indianapolis
naval
cruiser
in
Japanese
waters
on
July
29
,
1945
.
Maas
compares
the
book
to a
Greek
tragedy
citing
that they
both
contain
fate
,
gods
, and
disaster
. He
gives
some
background
on the
Indianapolis
ship
:
it
delivered
the
atomic
bomb
that
hit
Hiroshima
to
Tinian
,
it
sank
12
minutes
after
it
was
hit
by a
Japanese
torpedo
, and
300
out
of
1200
men
survived
the
sinking
.
Help
didn’t
arrive
until
4
days
later
,
because
no
one
reported
the
ship
missing
and
no
one
knew
it
sank
.
Maas
talks
about
interviewing
survivors
and
hearing
stories
of how they
managed
to
stay
alive
after
being
trapped
in
shark-infested
waters
for
4
days
. He
ends
the
interview
by
talking
about
the
survivors
'
reunion
and how the
captain
was
pardoned
for the
sinking
.
