Elijah Wald discusses his biography “Escaping the Delta.” He begins by explaining the influence of Blues musician Robert Johnson and how the genre of the Blues did not start in Mississippi like previously thought . He talks about other famous Blues musicians like Bessie Smith , W . C . Handy , and both black and white vaudeville stars who recorded Blues albums . He explains how in the 1930s the Blues began decreasing in popularity , so musicians at the time started to insert sexual innuendos in the songs . He ends the interview by discussing how Robert Johnson has influenced future generations of Blues musicians and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death .
