discusses
his
book

“The
Cantonists.”
He
begins
by
explaining
the
name
of the
book
and how the
cantonists
were a
group
of
Jewish
boy
soldiers
who
were
forced
to
fight
for the
Russian
army
under
Tsar
Nicholas
I
. He then
goes
into
detail
about
the
tactics
used
to
recruit
the
boys
such
as
punishment
,
torture
, and
starvation
. He
explains
that
once
recruited
, the
boys
were
forced
to
give
up
their
Judaic
religion
and
convert
to
Catholicism
.
Domnitch
talks
about
how
members
of
Jewish
families
would
do
anything
to
avoid
being
recruited
,
even
mutilating
and
blinding
themselves
or their
children
.
Martinson
asks
him to
read
an
excerpt
of his
book
, and
Domnitch
ends
the
interview
by
discussing
what
happened
to
boys
who
tried
to
escape
the
army
.
