Interviewee
Kirsch, Jonathan, 1949-
Interviewer
Martinson
,
Connie
Book Title
The grand inquisitor’s manual : a history of terror in the name of God
Subject
Terror - Religious aspects - Christianity - History
Inquisition
Description
Jonathan
Kirsch
discusses
his
book
,
“The
Grand
Inquisitor’s
Manual.”
He
begins
by
discussing
the
focus
of
some
of his
previous
books
and how this
book
is
different
in that
it
examines
how
government
and
religion
allied
together
during
the
Inquisition
,
which
was
designed
to
enforce
one
religion
and the
exclusion
of
all
others
. He then
shares
that he
hopes
to
disprove
a
lot
of
preconceived
notions
about
the
Inquisition
,
such
as the
idea
that
it
targeted
Jews
.
Kirsch
explains
that the
goal
of the
Inquisition
was to
police
Christianity
and to
enforce
what they
felt
was the
proper
form
of
worship
. He
points
to a
group
known
as the
Cathars
as the
first
victims
of the
Inquisition
. He
explores
how the
Cathars
were a
group
of
Christians
living
in the
South
of
France
and were
very
similar
to
Protestants
of
today
. He then
goes
on to
detail
some
of the
methods
of
torture
that were
used
during
the
Inquisition
.
Later
in the
interview
he
explores
the
views
and
arguments
that
excuse
the
participants
of the
Inquisition
.
