Description
Samuel
Freedman
discusses
his
book
,
“Who
She
Was.”
He
begins
by
discussing
his
reasons
for
writing
the
book
. He
shares
that his
mother
died
when
he was a
teenager
and he
later
decided
to
research
her
life
because
he
did
not
know
that she had been a
completely
different
person
in her
youth
. He then
explains
his
reasons
for not
visiting
her
grave
and how he
wrestled
with
saying
the
Jewish
Memorial
prayer
for her
every
year
because
she was
only
culturally
Jewish
and not
religious
. He also
shares
that he
is
a
professor
at
Columbia
University
and has
written
four
other
books
.
Freedman
then
goes
on to
explore
his
mother’s
life
, her
relationships
, and
Jewish
identity
.
Later
in the
interview
he
discusses
his
guilt
and
search
for
atonement
for
distancing
himself
from his
mother
prior
to her
death
as
well
as his
family’s
reaction
to his
book
.
