Book Title
From shul to cool : the romantic jewish roots of American popular music
Subject
Music
Jews Music
Music by Jewish composers
Description
Jacqueline
Bassan
discusses
her
book
,
“From
Shul
to
Cool.”
She
begins
by
explaining
the
inspiration
behind
the
book
,
which
came
from her
own
love
of
music
and how she
grew
up
listening
to
music
in
Shul
,
learning
Yiddish
folk
songs
,
show
tunes
, and
popular
music
and
one
day
realized
that
all
of
it
had a
lot
in
common
.
When
she
began
to
examine
the
music
further
, she
realized
that
Jewish
songwriters
,
who
were in
turn
inspired
by their
Jewish
musical
,
religious
and
cultural
roots
,
wrote
them
all
.
Bassan
also
discusses
how
Jewish
composers
such
as
Irving
Berlin
grew
up
listening
to
music
in
Shul
and how
music
was not
only
part
of his
religious
life
, but also his
daily
life
.
Bassan
goes
on to
share
that,
historically
,
music
has
played
a
sacred
role
in the
Jewish
religious
context
and
risen
to a
venerated
role
in the
cultural
context
of
Judaism
.
Later
in the
interview
,
Bassan
gives
more
specific
examples
of
songs
and
composers
whom
she
found
to have
very
specific
religious
influences
.
