Description
Trudi
Alexy
discusses
her
book
,
“The
Marrano
Legacy.”
She
begins
by
discussing
how the
book
chronicles
the
personal
correspondence
between
two
strangers
from
different
countries
who
shared
the
experience
of
discovering
in their
adolescence
that they were
Jewish
.
Alexy
explains
that the
first
of the
two
strangers
is
referred
to as
“Simon”
and
is
a
descendant
of
Spain’s
medieval
Marranos
who
submitted
to
baptism
to
escape
the
Inquisition
.
Alexy
shares
how
Simon
has
lived
the
life
of a
Crypto-Jewish
Catholic
priest
and
provides
protection
to a
community
of
secret
Jews
living
as
Catholics
in a
Latin
American
county
. The
second
is
Alexy
herself
who
survived
the
Holocaust
when
her
family
fled
from
Prague
to
Paris
and then
hid
in
Fascist
Spain
where
they were
baptized
Catholics
. She
goes
on to
share
how
fifty
years
later
when
she
set
out
to
recapture
her
lost
Jewish
identity
, she
discovered
a
spiritual
kinship
with the
medieval
Marranos
who
,
despite
being
forced
to
hide
their
Jewishness
,
held
onto their
traditions
in
secret
.
Later
in the
interview
Alexy
shares
how
during
their
correspondence
she
described
her
own
inner
conflicts
as she
struggled
to
understand
why
Simon
continues
to
live
in
danger
of
discovery
by
both
Catholics
and the
mainstream
Jewish
community
.
