Description
Sonia
Levitin
discusses
her
book
,
“Room
in the
Heart.”
She
begins
by
explaining
that the
book
deals
with the
historic
events
of the
Nazi
invasion
of
Denmark
during
World
War
II
. To
tell
the
story
,
Levitin
alternates
between
the
narratives
of
two
young
people
.
One
character
is
thirteen-year-old
Julie
who
struggles
as
life
becomes
increasingly
difficult
for her and her
Jewish
family
under
the
Nazi
occupation
. The
other
character
that
narrates
the
book
is
Julie’s
best
friend’s
brother
,
Niels
.
Niels
is
frustrated
at his
father’s
supposed
apathy
towards
the
occupation
and his
friend
Emil’s
idolization
of the
Nazis
. In
response
to his
frustrations
Niels
joins
the
resistance
.
Levitin
goes
on to
discuss
her
research
for the
novel
and her
work
in
Denmark
promoting
World
War
II
remembrance
. Also in this
interview
Levitin
tells
the
history
of the
German
invasion
of
Denmark
and the
resistance
of its
citizens
as
well
as the
rescue
of
Danish
Jews
.
