Book Title
The winter queen
Subject

Detectives
Coverage - Temporal
Nineteenth
century
Coverage - Spatial
Russia
Description
Boris
Akunin
discusses
his
book
,
“Winter
Queen.”
He
begins
by
sharing
that this
novel
is
the
first
from the
Erast
Fandorin
series
of
historical
detective
novels
that will
eventually
consist
of
16
books
.
Akunin
explains
that the
book’s
protagonist
,
Erast
Fandorin
,
is
a
young
detective
in
Russia
.
Akunin
decided
to
make
it
so
that
Erast
was
born
exactly
one
hundred
years
earlier
than
himself
,
so
that
it
would be
easier
for him to
calculate
how
old
he
is
each
year
in the
19th
century
. He also
explores
how
Erast
changes
and
matures
into what he
calls
a
“Superhero”
over
the
course
of the
novels
.
Akunin
compares
the
young
Erast
to a
setter
,
clumsy
and
sniffing
the
wind
for
clues
and
later
he also
compares
him to a
cat
with
nine
lives
. He
goes
on to
explain
his
writing
process
and how he
first
envisioned
the
opening
scene
of the
novel
and then
worked
from there.
Later
in the
interview
he
shares
that
before
he
became
a
novelist
he was a
philologist
,
critic
,
essayist
, and a
literary
translator
of
Japanese
literature
.
