Book Title
The third chimpanzee : the evolution and future of the human animal
Subject
Human evolution
Social evolution
Nature - Effect of human beings on
Description
Jared
Diamond
discusses
his
book
, "The
Third
Chimpanzee
: The
Evolution
and
Future
of the
Human
Animal.
" The
book
encompasses
the
history
of
evolution
from the
Neanderthals
, "
tree
of
human
life
" and "
last
first
contact.
" He
writes
that
humans
are
98%
gene
related
to the
chimpanzees
.
Diamond
views
"
last
first
contact
" as the
last
small
groups
of
people
in the
Amazon
and
New
Guinea
coming
into
contact
with
modern
civilization
. The
book
is
written
from the
science
and
human
emotional
perspective
. He
writes
about
genocide
and
dealing
with
it
from a
first
person
perspective
.
Diamond
got
this
perspective
dealing
with the
last
of the
tribal
genocide
in
New
Guinea
. He
discusses
quotes
from
American
generals
and
presidents
regarding
the
genocide
of the
American
Indians
. An
example
of this
is
a
quote
from
George
Washington
: "the
immediate
objectives
are the
total
destruction
of their
(Indian)
settlements
,
it
will be
essential
to
ruin
their
crops
in the
ground
and
prevent
them from
planting
more.
"
Diamond
writes
that the
potential
for
genocide
lies
within
all
of us, and that
it
only
takes
circumstances
to
bring
it
out
. He
uses
the
war
in
Yugoslavia
in the
1990s
as an
example
of this. He
says
that
genocide
is
an
animal
trait
derived
from
chimpanzees
and
gorillas
.
Diamond's
interview
ends
at the
pause
at the
end
of the
interview
.
