, "
Where
White
Men
Fear
to
Tread
: The
Autobiography
of
Russell
Means.
" The
book
is
not
only
about
his
life
, but the
experience
of the
American
Indian
. His
parents
moved
to
San
Francisco
so
he
wouldn't
have to
attend
the

boarding
schools
on the
reservation
. He
says
that
all
the
boarding
schools
were a
haven
for
people
who
abused
children
physically
,
sexually
, and
emotionally
.
Means
believes
the
purpose
of these
schools
was to
destroy
the

. He
says
that as a
young
adult
, he
became
a
champion
dancer
in his
culture
, and a
ballroom
dance
instructor
in
San
Francisco
.
Means
talks
about
the
cultural
bonding
practices
he had with
all
his
children
and
explains
that
it
starts
during
pregnancy
and
continues
well
into the
first
year
. He
speaks
of the
U.S
.
government's
deceit
towards
the
American
Indian
,
specifically
the
failure
of the
government
to
honor
the
treaties
it
has
made
with the
Indian
nations
.
Means
believes
that the
U.S
.
continuously
violates
the
Genocide
Treaty
by
removing
Indians
off
their
land
. He
talks
about
his
involvement
with the
American
Indian
Movement
(A.I.M.)
and its
struggles
against
the
Bureau
of
Indian
Affairs
.
Means
briefly
discusses
his
work
as an
actor
in
major
Hollywood
productions
.
