Book Title
The cyclist
Subject

Twenty-first
century
;
Twentieth
century
Coverage - Spatial
Europe
;
Middle
East
;
London
(England)
Description
Viken
Berberian
discusses
his
book
,
“The
Cyclist.”
He
begins
by
explaining
the
plot
,
which
follows
a
terrorist
who
plans
to
blow
up
a
hotel
during
a
cycling
race
. From there he
goes
on to
explain
that he
wanted
to
debunk
the
idea
that
political
terrorism
is
connected
to
one
national
or
religious
group
and that
is
why
he
left
the
national
identity
and
religion
of the
main
character
intentionally
vague
. He then
shares
how his
father
was
killed
in
1986
in a
terrorist
act
in
Lebanon
where
he
worked
during
the
Lebanese
Civil
War
. Also in this
interview
Berberian
explains
that what
helped
him
deal
with his
father’s
death
was the
realization
that
terrorism
and
political
violence
was not
specific
to his
family
, but
is
in
fact
something
experienced
by
people
throughout
the
world
.
Towards
the
end
of the
interview
he
explains
his
decision
to
make
the
terrorist
a
cyclist
and how the
book's
title
is
also a
metaphor
for the
cycle
of
violence
and
life
.
