AGHARWAH, a town of uncertain location mentioned several times in the HISTORY OF THE PATRIARCHS. During the patriarchate of JOHN III, Agharwah and Sakhitus, both of which had been Chalcedonian (that is, Greek Orthodox) communities, entered into the Coptic national church. The patriarch MARK II (799-819) stopped at Agharwah while journeying from Cairo to Alexandria and healed a man who was possessed. Though the location of Agharwah (Aghrawah) is uncertain, the History of the Patriarchs states that it was accessible from Alexandria, suggesting that it was somewhere in the Delta in the vicinity of Alexandria.
