(CE:63a-63b)
ADAM, a Coptic chanting term and one of the two leading melody types in the music of the Coptic Church. The other type is called WATUS. Coptic names have passed into the choir books of the Ethiopic church as well. The Adam melody (LAHN) receives its name from the first word of the first verse of the Theotokia for Monday, "Adam again being sad."
If the day is one of the first three of the week, that is, Sunday to Tuesday, the Theotokia of the day and its psali (and similarly the psali of the feast), the LOBSH, the DIFNAR, and the Tarh are sung to the melody of Adam.
The second HOS (ode) and its Lobsh are, however, sung daily to the Lahn Adam. Similarly the Adam doxology is sung after the office of the morning prayer in all the days of the week. The Adam ASPASMOS is also sung in the Anaphora each day.
