DARESSY, GEORGES EMILE JULES (1864-1938), French Egyptologist. Daressy was born at Sourdon. He studied at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes from 1881 to 1885. He went to Egypt as a member of the Mission archeologique française du Caire, later becoming its director. He was made assistant keeper at the Bulaq Museum in 1887. He was a member of the Institut d'Egypte (from 1894), and secretary general (1917); chevalier of the Legion of Honor; and commander of the Order of the Nile. He retired in France in 1923. He made a few contributions to Coptic studies, a list of which can be found in A Coptic Bibliography (Kammerer, 1950, 1969).
