DAQADUS, village in the province of Daqahliyyah. A medieval list of Egyptian church locations also says that the village of Daqadus was the site of a Church of Mary, the mother of Jesus. From the order of the place-names in the list it is reasonable to deduce that Daqadus was located in the Delta. Hence it is probable that modern Daqadus, located about one-half mile northeast of Mit Ghamr on the east arm of the Nile, is the village mentioned in the list.
Although there are no records to indicate when Christianity established a foothold in Daqadus, the Coptic church in the modern city was built over a medieval church and one of the manuscripts (no. 27) housed in the church is dated to 1332.
