BASILIUS (Bey) (d. 1847), eldest of three sons of Mu‘allim Ghali who was killed by Ibrahim Pasha, son of MUHAMMAD ‘ALI, at the city of Zifta. Muhammad ‘Ali appointed Basilius to succeed his father in the administration of finances and thus he became the first Copt to be granted the title of bey. Moreover, to reconcile the Ghali family, the viceroy appointed the other brothers, Doss and Tubya, to two principal posts in the government administration. Basilius remained in charge of the general finances of Egypt until his death in November 1847.
