BARDENHEWER, OTTO (1851-1935), German ecclesiastical historian specializing in patristic studies. He was born at Munich-Gladbach and educated at Bonn and Wurzburg. He lectured on exegesis of both the Old and the New Testament at Munich and Munster. His one-volume Patrologie (Freiburg, 1894) appeared in numerous editions and was translated into English by T. J. Shahan (St. Louis, 1908). Later he published a much more extensive work entitled Geschichte der altkirchlichen Literatur (5 vols., Freiburg, 1902-1932). This work is the most complete on the subject to date. It deals with the Greek literature associated with the church fathers from Alexandria in Volume 4 and Syrian literature in Volumes 4 and 5.
