BACHATLY, CHARLES (1909-1957), secretary of the SOCIETY OF COPTIC ARCHAEOLOGY from its establishment in 1934 until his death. He laid the foundations for the society's program of activity and for its library. He also designed its main series of publications. In 1944 he organized at Cairo a successful exhibition of Coptic art, which was probably the first anywhere in the world. In 1948 and 1949 he directed the society's excavations at DAYR APA PHOIBAMMON in Upper Egypt.
