5. Monasteries of the Delta: Of the many monasteries in the Delta, many have vanished; some can still be identified by ruins, such as the innumerable sites excavated in the Kellia by the French and Swiss expeditions; and some have survived the Islamization of Egypt and the urbanization of the area. (See DAYR ANBA MAQAR; DAYR AL-BARAMUS; DAYR AL-SURYAN; KELLIA; and articles on the Beheirah, Daqahliyyah, Gharbiyya, Minufiyyah, Qalyubiyyah, and Sharqiyyah provinces under MONASTERIES.)
