WHITTEMORE, THOMAS (1871-1950), American archaeologist and Byzantine scholar. He was director of the Byzantine Institute of America, which published the Coptic Studies in Honor of Walter Ewing Crum (Boston, 1950). From 1911 to 1926 he was the American representative of the Egypt Exploration Society and excavated in Egypt. From 1930 to 1931 he led an archaeological expedition to the monasteries of Saint Antony and Saint Paul in the Eastern Desert. All its material (notes, copies of the frescoes and inscriptions, photos) is unpublished.
