TISCHENDORF, KONSTANTIN VON (1815-1874), German Lutheran theologian. In 1851 he became professor of New Testament studies at Leipzig. On his travels he discovered, and later collated and edited, many biblical manuscripts and palimpsests. Well known is his discovery of the Codex Sinaiticus at Saint Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai, published in Leipzig, 1859. His edition of the New Testament rests above all on this codex and on the Codex Vaticanus. His critical edition (Leipzig, 1869-1972), with its extensive apparatus, is a standard tool of New Testament textual criticism.
