THOMPSON, HENRY FRANCIS HERBERT (1859-1944), English Coptologist and demotic scholar. He took up Egyptology at the age of forty under the influence of Flinders Petrie, and studied at University College, Cambridge. After training in Egyptology, he specialized in Coptic and demotic. He published many independent works and assisted W. E. Crum in the completion of his Coptic dictionary. He was a generous supporter of archaeology as well and presented his library to the Egypt Exploration Fund in 1919. His Coptic and demotic works include The Demotic Magical Papyrus of London and Leiden (with F. L. Griffith, 3 vols., London, 1904-1909). He also contributed chapters to Petrie's Gizeh and Rifeh and J. E. Quibell's Monastery of Apa Jeremias; by his will he founded a chair of Egyptology at Cambridge.
