TATTAM, HENRY (1789-1868), English Coptologist. He visited Egypt and Syria in 1838-1839 to obtain Oriental manuscripts and brought back a considerable number of Coptic manuscripts and antiquities. He was one of the pioneers of Coptic studies in England and probably the most distinguished figure in the field at that time. He published many important works, especially A Compendious Grammar of the Egyptian Language as Contained in the Coptic and Sahidic Dialects (London, 1830).
