STRZYGOWSKI, JOSEF (1862-1941), Austrian art historian
and professor at the University of Vienna. At the beginning of his
career Strzygowski was interested in the sources of late antique and
early Christian art, and he pointed out the importance of the Orient
for the evolution of Western art. Between 1898 and 1906 he
published the following important works on Coptic art: "Die
christlichen Denkmäler Ägyptens," Römische Quartalschrift 12
(1898):1-41; Orient oder Rom? (Leipzig, 1901); "Der Schmuck der
älteren el-Hadrakirche im syrischen Kloster der sketischen Wüste,"
Oriens Christianus 1 (1901):356-72; Hellenistische und koptische
Kunst in Alexandria (Vienna, 1902); "Der koptische Reiterheilige
und der hl. Georg," Zeitschrift für ägyptische Sprache und
Altertumskunde 40 (1902-1903):49-60; "Seidenstoffe aus Ägypten
im Kaiser Friedrich-Museum," Jahrbücher der preussischen
Kunstsammlungen 24 (1903):147-78; Koptische Kunst (Vienna,
1904); and Eine alexandrinische Weltchronik. Text und Miniaturen
