STERN, LUDWIG (1846-1911), German Egyptologist, Orientalist, and Celtic scholar. He specialized in Oriental languages, mastering Hebrew, Arabic, and Ethiopic. He turned to Egyptology under H. K. Brugsch in 1868 and continued his studies in the Egyptian Department of the Berlin Museum. In 1872 he was appointed librarian of the Khedivial Library at Cairo. In 1874 he was appointed to the staff of the Egyptian Department of the Berlin Museum. His best-known Coptic work was his valuable Koptische Grammatik (1880).
