SCHUBART, WILHELM (1873-1960), German papyrologist. He was a pupil of Ulrich Wilcken and worked from 1898 until 1937 at the Papyrusabteilung of the State Museum at Berlin. After his retirement from the museum, he was professor of ancient history at Leipzig University (1945-1952). Among his numerous publications (cf. Morenz, 1950, pp. 7-24) there are important books about Christian Egypt, including Ägypten von Alexander dem Grossen bis auf Mohammed (Berlin, 1922) and Justinian und Theodora (Munich, 1943), and many publications of Christian papyri, such as "Ein lateinisch-griechisch-koptisches Gesprächsbuch" (Klio, 13, 1913, pp. 27-38) and "Christliche Predigten aus Ägypten" (Mitteilungen des archäologischen Instituts Kairo 1, 1930, pp. 93-105). He published some texts with C. Schmidt (Berliner Klassiker-Texte, Vol. 6, Altchristliche Texte, Berlin, 1910; Acta Pauli, Glückstadt and Hamburg, 1936) and with H. Junker ("Ein griechisch-koptisches Kirchengebet," Zeitschrift für ägyptische Sprache und Altertumskunde 40, 1902, pp. 1-31).
