MONASTERIES IN THE MINUFIYYAH PROVINCE. This province occupies the southern part of the Delta between the two principal branches of the Nile, that of Rosetta to the west and that of Damietta to the east.
The traces of and witnesses for monastic establishments here are very few in number, for we can cite only Atris and Malij.
Malij is situated a few miles north of Shibin al-Kom (Amélineau, 1893, p. 503). ABU AL-MAKARIM (1984, pp. 72-73) mentions very briefly a monastery with a church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.
