LEIPOLDT, JOHANNES (1880-1965), German theologian and Coptologist. He studied theology and Egyptology, mainly Coptic, under Georg Steindorff at Leipzig. He was professor of New Testament studies in Leipzig (1916-1954), where he taught S. Morenz, among other notable scholars. He also published Coptic nonliterary (Koptische Urkunden, Berlin, 1904-1905, with A. Erman) and literary texts (Sinuthii Archimandritae Vita et Opera Omnia, Paris, 1906-1913) and wrote the biography of Shenute (Leipzig, 1903).
