Description |
Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara. Frontal view. The free standing statue carved from a single rock of limestone/dolomite marble, 9.85 meters in height, found fallen from its pedestal in the 1950s. Restored in 1990. Refer signage on premises. The statue represents the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, but see the signage, where it is identified also as the Bodhisattva Maitreya. The upper torso lacks clothing, but is decorated with different necklaces as well as a narrow decorated band across the chest. The jatamakuta, ornate and conical hairdress, has an image of Amitabha, the principal and celestial Buddha in Pure Land Buddhism, who is described in Mahāyāna scriptures. A flat collar necklace and a long chain with beads of decreasing size add a sense of elegance. The ears bear long earring and the arms double amulets.
