Description |
Republican mural, New Lodge Road, New Lodge, Belfast, 1997. Mural commemorating various prison campaigns by the Republican movement through historical iconic images. Central image, hands cuffed together wrapped in barbed wire (invokes one of the oldest surviving murals at Clowney Street), overlaid with verse from Bob Dylan's 'Blowin' in the Wind'. Clockwise from bottom left: Scottish soldier violently arresting demonstrator, above, the conveyor belt of the British system of justice (reference to mural in Beechmount Avenue), with protestors holding banner across roadway; left and above, Armagh women's prison, prison cell with bed and woman prisoner, representation of Mairéad Farrell, IRA prisoner who went on Hunger Strike in 1981 and was killed on active service in Gibraltar 1988; depiction of rooftop protest in English jail - 'Repatriate Irish POWs' campaigh. Centre, top, 'Free the POWs', with green ribbon used to remember the prisoners. "Saoirese' (Gaelic for 'Freedom). Top right, Blanketman writing Irish lesson on prison wall - 'Tá mé, Tá tú' (I am You are), woman prisoner below in position for strip search; centre right and diagonally to left across, iconic posters from Republican Campaigns: Margaret Thatcher wanted for murder, Pat McGeown, one of the Hunger Strikers, plastic bullets, 'They May Kill the Revolutionary but never the Revolution', British Army snatch squad, 'Free Roisín McAuley'; bottom right, Republican women protesting dressed as as prisoners 'on the blanket' (ie refusing to wear prison uniform), with the Maze Prison in the background, with posters of the Hungers Strikers. Centre, bottom, women banging binlids to announce the death of Bobby Sands. |
