The Macpherson Collection By and About
Women is one of the “ star” collections at
Denison Library. The collection is focused in
four thematic areas: Emancipation and
Reform, Domestic History, Westward Expansion,
and Women in the Humanist
Tradition. Some of the items in the collection
may be checked out, while others are
part of our special collections and located in
the Macpherson Treasure Room. Most
requested from the Macpherson Treasure
Room, and perhaps most fascinating, are
the women’s magazines and etiquette books
from the nineteenth century. The magazines
are often beautifully illustrated with “ fashion
plates” that detail the period’s most chic
and trendy clothing and hairstyles. The
etiquette books offer tips on manners and
other women’s topics, including beauty,
housewifery, home medical treatments, and
proper exercises for ladies.
To search for materials in the Macpherson
Treasure Room use the Blais online
catalog’s advanced search screen. Start
with a broad keyword search on your topic
and limit it to “ Denison Special Collections.”
